South Africa develops new anti-malarial medicine using Asteraceae plants

Scientists in South Africa have developed new medicines for the treatment of malaria using effective ingredients extracted from locally grown Asteraceae plants. According to South African media reports, Gilbert Marsa Pisa, head of the local medical department at the South African Medical Research Council, said that the main ingredient of the new drug was extracted from a species of asteraceae growing in sub-Saharan Africa. The plant has been used by local people to treat stomach problems, but scientists have unexpectedly discovered that it can treat malaria. Martha Pisa said that South Africa hopes to grow this plant commercially in the country to produce cheap anti-malaria drugs. Martha Pisa said that clinical results show that this drug is effective in treating malaria. They have already begun patent registration on a global scale and hope to cooperate with others in the large-scale production of this drug in South Africa. According to figures released by the World Health Organization, there are more than one million people who die from malaria every year in the world, of which Africa accounts for 80%.
