Wang Ming, director of the Guangzhou Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters that prior to this, researchers had isolated the coronavirus from market-selling civet cats, but did not find a direct link between the civet and SARS patients. In early 2004, a female worker working in a restaurant was diagnosed with SARS. The examination revealed that the restaurant had six civet cats. The researchers realized that this was a good opportunity to trace the source of SARS. Instead of destroying the SARS routinely, the six civet cats were brought back to the laboratory and sampled from the civet for a period of time. The results were continuous. The coronaviruses were isolated from this day. By comparing with the patient's gene sequence, the results were basically the same.

It is reported that the study was conducted by the Guangzhou Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention in cooperation with the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the University of Hong Kong.
