This gene can help nerve cells recycle and use the chemical that sends the signal - serotonin. Serotonin is thought to be closely related to mood swings.

The study found that 5-HTT gene has two structures of "long" and "short". People who inherited two "long" 5-HTT genes from their parents tend to feel more satisfied than those who have other combinations of genes.

The most unhappy is someone who has been born with two "short" 5-HTT genes.

De Neveus said that their research shows that happiness is closely related to the different combinations of 5-HTT genes. "Of course, our sense of happiness is not entirely determined by this gene, other genes and our experience in life. It is also an important reason why personal happiness is not the same."

However, Dnefurth believes that this finding helps explain why each person's sense of well-being varies, and why some people are relatively more likely to be happy. "This is inextricably linked to the genetic structure of each of us."
