Xinjiang rice breeding experts discovered the evergreen gene

In a rice plot in Wensu County, Aksu Prefecture, there is a small piece of rice that is different. In autumn, when the surrounding rice has matured and yellowed, its leaves are green. Liang Naoting, a researcher at the Wensu Rice Experiment Base of the Autonomous Region’s Academy of Agricultural Sciences, told the reporter: “The only evergreen gene in the world is here.” The discovery of the evergreen gene was accidental. In 1997, Liang Naiting and his colleagues gamma-ray treated dried seeds of the “Flower Dance” rice variety and planted them in experimental fields. When rice was grown and individual plants were selected, Liang Naiting discovered that a rice plant was particularly green. In the second year, they planted the seeds of this mutant rice. When the rest of the rice is harvested in the fall, the rice leaves are still green. This was true for several years in a row. Liang Naiting and his colleagues therefore judged that this mutant rice bears evergreen genes. Liang Naoting believes that this mutant gene can be transferred to the parents of hybrid rice through sexual crossing. It is easy to distinguish the parents of hybrid rice when harvesting, and it is beneficial to increase the purity of hybrid rice seeds. For example, gene patents can be applied if the evergreen gene sequence that shows the evergreen shape is found and separated and cloned. If the evergreen gene is successfully introduced into the plant, it will keep the plant's leaves green. Because genetic mutations are not reproducible, rice with green genes is especially valuable. There have been several foreign experts who have contacted Liang Naiting and expressed their interest in the evergreen gene. At present, researchers are conducting in-depth research on evergreen genes.
