Treatment and thinking of deltamethrin poisoning in pregnant sows

In pig production, an insect-repellent drug, 5% deltamethrin (Beta), is used as a brownish brown residue; a thick liquid is used to kill a variety of parasites such as fleas, ticks, and fleas in vitro. The role is a topical insecticide. Commonly used concentrations of 50 ~ 80ml / cubic meter, administered by the body surface spray. This medicine is safe to use if required. However, if used improperly, it will cause animal poisoning. In a medium-sized pig farm with 300 basic sows, pregnant sows were poisoned due to incorrect delivery (intramuscular injection) when pregnant sows were placed on prepartum worms. The poisoning case is reported as follows.

1 Causes of poisoning

On September 27th, 2005, the pig farm was routinely dewormed to the laboring sow (20 days before delivery) according to the operating rules. The veterinarian sent the detoxification drug deltamethrin (Bewter) for external use. The rearing operation was performed because the previously used anthelmintic drug was administered intramuscularly. As a result, the rearing worker received the drug and then injected 7 ml of each intramuscular injection of 24 gestating sows from 17:30 to 17:50 on the same day. At 6 o'clock in the afternoon, when the technicians inspected the special odor of deltamethrin when they went to the piggery, they asked the breeder. At this time, they discovered that the drug administration was wrong and realized the seriousness of the problem. A deltamethrin-injected pregnant sow was given and measures were taken.

2 symptoms of poisoning

At 18:10 in the afternoon, 2 sows had shortness of breath, up to 120 beats per minute. They breathed open their mouths, and they heard sounds of breathing more than ten meters away. At 18:30, 3 sows had the same symptoms, and the 2 sows with the first symptoms showed arrogant symptoms. They constantly slammed the door and tended to lie down. The body temperature of the sows with symptoms of poisoning is between 38.5°C and 39.7°C, which is basically normal. Eighteen poisoned sows emerged one after another at 18:55, and there were no other eye symptoms except for respiratory symptoms and manic uneasiness. The first injected sows first showed symptoms. In total, there were 9 sows with symptoms of poisoning, including 1 sow with 8 births, 8 sows with 2 – 4 births, and 15 other sows had no abnormalities.

3 treatment

Due to the sudden appearance of problems, production management personnel experienced from the end, check the information did not find detoxification drugs deltamethrin effects, in the case of extreme emergency, according to the conventional treatment of poisoning treatment: dilution of poisons, Detoxification liver protection, accelerate the excretion of poisons.

Sows with symptoms of toxicity at 18:30 were injected intravenously with 25% glucose (250 ml/head), followed by intravenous injection of large doses of 5% glucose saline + vitamin C injection. The specific dosage is: 500m1 of 5% glucose saline + 20ml of vitamin C injection, the amount of severe symptoms: 5% glucose physiological saline 2500ml + vitamin C injection 100m1, the symptoms of mild use: 5% glucose saline 1000M500ml + vitamin C injection 40 to 60 ml.

4 treatment effect and prognosis

4.1 As the infusion progressed, by 2O'clock in the evening, the two mildly symptomatic and the two sows with the first symptoms gradually returned to normal breathing (16-20 times/minute) until 20:30. Five heads returned to normal, 20:50 head returned to normal, heads returned to normal at 21:20, heads returned to normal at 21:35, and the most severe symptoms returned to normal at 22:35 in the evening. There was no evidence of poisoning, and no symptomatic sows had been treated.

4.2 24 sows were fed at 8:00 am on the second day. As a result, the intake of all sows was not significantly different from that before poisoning.

4.3 24 gestation sows all part licked from October 15 to October 23, total 262 larvae, 243 live zombies, 14 stillbirths, 5 mummy fetuses, and 10.13 live births. The fetuses all produced 0.58 fetal deaths. Although the fetuses were born with slightly higher stillbirth than normal, compared with the litter size in the same period of the pig farm, the effect of deltamethrin poisoning on the fetus was not serious.

5 Discussion and Summary

5.1 According to the "Swine Farm Diseases" report, "Pyrethroids are relatively non-toxic to mammals and therefore do not cause pig poisoning." However, if the insecticide is injected intramuscularly, it can also cause pigs to become poisoned.

5.2 According to the results of 9 poisoning symptoms in the 24 pregnant sows injected with deltamethrin, although half of the poisoning was not achieved, the adult sow (200-230 kg body weight) was given an intramuscular injection of deltamethrin. Ester 0.35 ml/head (75%), I believe it can also be used as a reference value for half of the poisoning dose in adult sows.

5.3 For adult sows, intramuscular injection of deltamethrin 0.35 ml/head is approximately 40 to 50 minutes from the time of drug use to the onset of symptoms of poisoning. In the case of large-dose infusion therapy, the time from poisoning to disappearance is approximately 120 to 140 minutes.

5.4 In this case, the pregnant sow's pregnant fetus was not affected by the poisoning. It may be due to the timely treatment of the poisoned sow, and has not caused oxygen deficiency to the fetus due to dyspnea after poisoning, if the symptoms of poisoning persist. Longer time may also cause fetal death.

5.5 Although the misuse of the medication did not result in the death of the pregnant sow, the tracking of the litter size did not affect the follow-up production. However, this serious consequence caused by errors in the administration of medicine should cause the grass-roots veterinary personnel to attach great importance to it. In particular, there are a wide variety of veterinary drugs, and most of them are in English. Therefore, it is imperative to strengthen the training and learning of veterinary technicians on farms, improve business skills, and prevent similar incidents from happening again.
