Propolis harvesting points and storage

Propolis refers to the honey bee (Western bee species) worker bee from the plant shoots and broken parts of the trunk after the collection of resin into the parotid gland secretions and beeswax synthesis of a kind of aromatic odor gummy solids. It is the daily protective material for bees filling the cracks in the beehive, strengthening the nests, and embedding the bodies of intruders.

Propolis harvesting

Propolis collection should be carried out in conjunction with bee colony inspection. The propolis should be scraped from the cover cloth, the frame, the partition, or the gap between the nest box and the sub tank. The method of collecting propolis is different because of the habits and conditions of the beekeepers.

(1) Scraping from the beehive cloth, the upper beam of the frame and the beehive. Sprout propolis can be readily removed during opening of the sub-cover or cover and lifting of the spleen. However, bees, spleen, sawdust and other debris must be removed at any time to avoid reducing the quality of propolis.

(2) Adopt the method of changing the king board and the sub cover. Replace the septum and iron gauze cover with a large amount of propolis, save it, and wait until the temperature drops. After the propolis has become solid, lay a layer of newspaper and gently knock down the propolis. The propolis thus taken is of high purity and good quality.

(3) Collect propolis by shortening the size of the frame and shoulder frame. When taking the glue, the working environment should be kept clean. When taking the glue, the hand should be washed first. The scraped propolis should be careful to remove the impurities and pinch tightly to form a mass. The non-toxic plastic film (such as food bag) should be timely sealed. Propolis softens at a certain temperature, easily contaminates your fingers and clothes, and can be removed with alcohol (or higher liquor). Used alcohol can be stored for the next time. Alkali can also be used as a detergent, the effect is better.

Propolis storage

After the propolis has been kneaded into a mass, it is promptly packaged with oil-based paper and non-toxic plastic film (plastic food bag) to prevent volatile aromatic oils from escaping. Propolis to be sold should be stored in a dry, cool place.
